It’s not always easy to work your way out of debt. There will be bumps in the road, like unexpected expenses and depression. Just remember though, that you are making progress even if sometimes you get knocked back a couple of steps.
Focus on the end of the road to being debt free and not the bumps.
When you are trying to get out of debt, one area you can cut back on is gym memberships. You can instead workout at home for much cheaper if you are willing to change your routine some.
A typical gym membership in our experience has been $45 to $60 per month for a family package. So we were paying at least $540 per year.
I know this doesn’t sound like much, but then you have to add in the cost of gas round trip to the gym plus the time it takes. Our local gym was 7 miles away, so 14 miles of traffic to deal with. We would go 4+ times a week on average. So that equates to roughly 242 miles per month. My car gets 20 miles per gallon and gas is $3.50 per gallon.
(224 mi / 20 mpg) x $3.50 = $39.20 per month in gasoline.
So I was spending at least $85 per month to workout, not including times that my wife drove separately.
All in all I estimate that we spending approximately $100 per month. All of that can go towards paying down debt, plus all the time we have saved.
Note: There was a one time cost to purchase 3 sets of different weight dumbbells which was about $32.
